The indefatigable and committed Bernie Bonvoisin, the figurehead of Trust, has shaped an entire chapter in French music history. With his committed lyrics, electrified stage performances and international ambitions, he turned Trust into a phenomenon extending far beyond France's borders. Much more than a socially committed punk band, Trust was the quintessential French rock band. Acknowledged by their Anglo-Saxon peers, they played with AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Anthrax, and have survived the ages with all their punk vivacity and piquancy.
More than a fascinating encounter, Bernie Bonvoisin's visit to Matt's Guitar Shop gave us the opportunity to discuss his relationship with the electric guitar. Known for his lyrics and songwriting, he is less well known for his musical talents. From an early age, Bernie surrounded himself with the best musicians in his circle - from Nono Krief to Yso - to set his acerbic lyrics to music.
But, fascinated by the suave, delicate yet sharp shape of guitars, he soon wanted to buy one. He settled ona 1963 Gibson SG, which quickly became his faithful instrument, accompanying him to concert halls, recording studios and jam sessions. Bernie bought this guitar in 1978, before deciding to part with it in 2025 after almost 50 years of loyal service.
Bernie Bonvoisin has always appreciated guitars as singular art objects. Their shapes, curves and physical presence in space have always attracted and fascinated him. His decision to buy an SG was thus fully motivated: in his eyes, it was the very incarnation of the rock guitar.
This Gibson SG was Bernie's faithful guitar. From Trust rehearsals in Nono's hands, to concerts, to recent recordings with Yso, this guitar was everywhere Bernie went. He even undertook early on to decorate the case to make it a testimony to his immense career and an art object in its own right: painted and decorated with passes of all kinds.
