Philip Lynott (known as Phil Lynott) is one of those ephemeral trajectories tragically torn from life by their excesses. Despite his untimely death, he left an indelible mark during his brief but dazzling career on the rock scene. Phil Lynott's legacy as an immense songwriter and performer of rare lyricism remains intact, surely establishing him as one of the most charismatic and eloquent singers and songwriters in Irish rock when he led Thin Lizzy. As mythical as his afro, Phil Lynott's translucent Dan Armstrong bass is one of the symbols of a unique character in the musical landscape of the late 20th century. In the musical landscape designed by the great names of Fender, Gibson or Gretsch, Dan Armstrong's instruments offer an astonishing and original visual that made the reputation of his collaboration with Ampeg. The perfectly translucent body of these plexiglass instruments makes them distinct and unique. Many great musicians have built the reputation of this model and have taken to these transparent tops, but there are no two like Phil Lynott. The Irish musician made the Ampeg Dan Armstrong a first choice bass in his early days as a musician. His early stage appearances were immortalized with a transparent bass offering an original and avant-garde look that gradually built his legend. This direct glimpse of his outfit through an unobtrusive instrument added a surprising and hitherto rarely seen visual depth.
As he confided in an interview in November 1981, the Plexiglas Dan Armstrong was the instrument he played when he first started playing bass. He said that the bass was "very fast" and eventually it was playing him. The beginnings of Thin Lizzy are thus immortalized with this bass in the hands of Phil Lynott. Numerous photographs document the incredible history of this transparent bass, and it appears notably in the recording of the song "Whiskey In The Jar" performed by Thin Lizzy in 1973 on the BBC show Top Of The Pops. This exceptional bass with an extraordinary history is the only Phil Lynott bass in existence on the market. It comes with its original case featuring the Thin Lizzy logo spray-painted and the many stickers stuck by Phil Lynott.
To add to its already unusual history, this Dan Armstrong bass guitar was later owned by Glenn Hughes, the famous bassist and singer of Deep Purple with whom Phil Lynott worked as bassist on Gary Moore's Run For Cover album. In addition to playing it, Glenn Hughes also signed it on his translucent body. A wonderful piece of music history!
