The ES-295 is one of Gibson’s legendary models thanks to its association with a specific artist, Scotty Moore, the original guitarist of the trio in which Elvis Presley began his career. Moreover, in 1954, when this beauty was made, the trio was recording its first songs, paving the way for a musical and cultural revolution from which none of us has yet fully recovered.
Like its cousin the 1952 Les Paul Gold Top, the ES-295 very gracefully blends a golden hue, two cream P90s (“dog ear”, whereas those of the Les Paul are “soap bar”), and the trapeze bridge typical of the early ‘50s. All these parts are perfectly intact, and even the Gold Top finish has remained impressively clean, unlike so many vintage specimens that have suffered from oxidation. Even the bridge has retained its original gold with barely a scratch. It must be said that before entering the Matt’s Guitar Shop collection, this Gibson had only one owner who handled it with the appropriate care.
As an interesting bonus, the original case of this ES-295 has the classic brown on the outside but its interior plush is green instead of the usual pink. Proof that everything has had its place in the panoply of vintage Gibsons, even this green cherry on a magnificent golden cake.
